The Road to Confidence: [FOTD] Pink & Purple Wonderland

Sometimes, I wish I didn’t procrastinate so much. I’d achieve so much more if I weren’t such a master at procrastination.
Take this shot for example. I procrastinated so much at taking the photo that I missed out on natural light and out of the 100 photos or so taken in my terrible excuse of a bathroom, only one was deemed worthy enough to be put on the blog.

I kid you not.

You might remember the Fashion Wannabe Post that I did a few days ago. I showed you my dress, but not the look that went with it, so here it is!

Here’s what I used:

Bobbi Brown – BB Cream
Urban Decay – Primer Potion
Beauty Pro Cosmetics – Crazy Colour Palette
LimeCrime – Liquid Eyeliner in Quill (Black) and Lunar (White)
Physician Formula – Happy Booster™ Glow & Mood Boosting Blush in Rose*
Ciccone Cosmetics – Voluptus*

For the newcomer to this blog, The Road to Confidence is my irregular series that shares a series of different makeup looks that I’ve come up with. It can range from the wild and crazy looks to the normal day-to-day wear and there is no real planning, no rhyme nor reason to what goes into this series. It’s just me, playing with makeup, trying to gain more skills and more confidence.

My Top 5s – Top 5 Cosmetic Brands

1. Face of Australia

A brand that flew under the radar till marketer extraordinaire Tinniepoo came onto the scene. High end cosmetics at budget store prices. Absolutely gorgeous limited edition nail polish collections, watch out for them! Celeste recommends picking up their: Liquid Eyeliner and Eye makeup remover.

2. Bobbi Brown

Bobbi Brown and myself share a similar philosophy. We believe that everybody is beautiful and everybody is gorgeous in their own way. I love that Bobbi Brown Cosmetics are of incredibly high standard. They are committed to being the best and are very handy for those of us who lean more towards neutral and subtle looks. Celeste recommends: Corrector and Concealer

3. Urban Decay

Filled with eye-popping colours, this quality brand is filled with enough colours to satisfy even the most colour-hungry makeup lover. And if that’s not enough, then take a dive into their shimmer filled eyeshadows. Breathtaking products with an amazing dare-to-do attitude. Celeste recommends: Every single eyeshadow palette you can get hold of and their 24/7 Glide on Eye pencils. They are da bomb. Oh, and don’t forget their eye primer either!

4. Benefit Cosmetics

With their love for vintage glamour and inspiration from the retro era, Benefit Cosmetics has to be one of the more eye-catching department store cosmetic brand there is. Their packaging is bright and colourful while others tend to go for the more toned down or black sleek look. Bugger that, it’s all fun and colour loving for this girl! Celeste recommends: Benefit Magic Ink.

5. Tony Moly

Tony Moly is a Korean cosmetic brand so I wouldn’t be surprised if you haven’t heard of it. They have incredibly adorable packaging while still maintaining a high quality in their products. Their price range is about mid-range, so while it isn’t super cheap, it’s quite affordable still. The only downside being that you’d have to be in Korea, Taiwan, Singapore or Malaysia to shop from one of their outlets. Alternatively, get your head around Gmarket and you will be able to purchase it from them too. Celeste recommends: Eggpore or aka face primer

Celeste’s Top 5s are purely what they sound like – my own personal list of Top 5s at the current time of writing. Quick facts, no long personal stories, just a quick list of what’s hot and rocking right now.

Review: Bobbi Brown Sheer Finish Loose Powder

Product: Loose Powder
Brand: Bobbi Brown
Price: $65 aud
Buy from: Bobbi Brown Online or Bobbi Brown counters in Myers and David Jones.

I purchased this quite awhile ago from Singapore but didn’t start using it till recently. Mainly because I have been trying some new foundations and BB creams that actually required setting for it to look any decent, so out came the loose powder.

I haven’t use too many loose powders in my lifetime so really, I can’t tell you how it compares to others. Loose powder just seems to me as such an unnecessary product. Unless the foundation you are using needs setting, why else would you need it? Or is the fact that I don’t always use it to set my foundation a cause for a rap of the knuckles? I am aware of the benefits of having loose powder such as taking away the shine on your face but I still think it’s not an essential for the makeup kit. Nice to have, but not essential for the budget conscious.

Here’s what I think of it:

  • Dusted lightly over the face with a brush, the powder sets foundation beautifully.
  • It claims to be oil-absorbing and it delivers. A beautiful smooth finish that looks natural and barely-there.
  • I do like my skin with the loose powder on, it looks flawless!
  • Packaging is modern and sleek, like the rest of Bobbi Brown’s products. Product is in a jar with a sifter.

  • To be honest, I have nothing bad to say about this. The product delivers what it claims and definitely works a charm. I have a few other loose powders that I have lined up to try so most likely I will be able to do a better comparison then.

Bin it or Keep it: Keep it. It works. Not sure if I’d restock it though, especially if I can find loose powder that works equally well at half the price…

What do you think? Is Loose Powder a must?

Holiday Haul – mainly hair and not much beauty.

I remember my last holiday in Melbourne. It was like I had forgotten the meaning of ‘savings’ and had gone absolutely batshit with buying new things. It wasn’t a pretty sight, well, my bank account wasn’t, but my collection cabinet was definitely pretty!

This time, I didn’t do quite the same as I had spent quite a lot of money on a new toy for my car. Edgy needed his 50,000km service and new wiper blades but that’s not what the new toy was… Edgy was fitted with a brand new cruise control unit as he didn’t originally come with one. Very fancy, very useful especially with all that long distance driving I do, but oh-so-worth-it! But it was an eye-watering four digit bill that came with this new toy. So while Edgy is happy, it did mean I was severely handicapped in my shopping abilities.

Which turned out to be alright anyways, because not much caught my attention… funny how that works.

I do, however, have very generous friends. Presents from friends made for the bulk of this haul post! They include items from Illamasqua, Bobbi Brown, Becca and more! I can’t wait to play with it all, hooray! Having said that, I also have new items from the lovely Jac but they are up in Murrayville so no photos.. whoops.

Speaking of photos, my Melbourne house has deplorable lighting. I can’t wait to get back to my country home with my massive windows and beautiful lighting!

A venture into Target to pick up some exercise clothes (shock!horror!) had me pick up some cuticle care as well. I’m really not big on nail care. I cut them, I paint them, what else can I do with them? But I want to give everything a go once, and I remember how my manicurist once berated me on how I didn’t care for my cuticles, so I picked these up. And promptly cut myself trying to get rid of my cuticles but that’s another story for another time.

I cannot deny my roots. I cannot deny a bargain. I am swimming in lip balms (they seem to have made babies while I wasn’t looking…) but I still had to pick these up. My love story with Boost starts from 2003 when I first came to this country. And it was one of those things that my first boyfriend and I drank a lot of during our dating sessions. Mmm. Boost. Anyways, I picked these two up!

And in a fit of silliness, I picked this up from Daiso. I’ve looked at it many times before and shook my head, but it somehow made its way to my basket this time. It’s a face massager, roller, thing. Supposedly to help slim your face and give it the much sought after V shape that the Asians love so much. I’ll report back on my findings! It also doesn’t photograph properly in this half-light, so what looks like a fluoro nightmare, is actually the half translucent pink massaging rollers. I foresee a very hilarious review in the future.

And what I picked up today. A colour enhancer to make sure the blonde in my hair stays blonde and not turn orange. Hold up, blonde in your hair you say? Indeed, I do have blonde in my hair now. And I’ve been told it’s either ‘odd’ or ‘interesting’ or ‘cool’ … the list goes on. Which is rather amusing, as I haven’t had colour in my hair since 2003 or 2004.. somewhere there. I don’t colour my hair very often, and it has always been a red or a copper that I went for. So blonde is a huge leap. Photos to come.

And while I was at hairhouse warehouse, I couldn’t help but notice this. And this is where I confess that reading blogs will be my downfall one day. The lovely Michelle had been sporting beautiful hair recently and she has attributed her glowing hair to Nak. So even though this isn’t the exact product, it is still the same brand and well, I’m a sucker and now I’m all curious about the brand… and…

Having said that, I think the value pack was definitely a very, very good buy. Two full size bottles of shampoo and conditioner, a detangling spray, a lip gloss, a conditioning treatment , and leave in moisturizer along with mini curling tongs, tail comb and sectioning clips!

There’s also a salon voucher for Hairhouse warehouse, but I’m not going to use that so if anybody wants it, shoot me an email and I’ll send it to you!

And last but not least – I didn’t get this during my holiday. In fact I got it quite a while ago, but ….

Yup. I joined the hype. But I’m not impressed. Review to come!

And that’s it. Regular blogging will return on monday, latest, Tuesday. Gosh, I have so much to share!

Major Lemming – Bobbi Brown Extra Repair Foundation

Bobbi Brown will be the death of me yet. I’ve followed the brand for many years, going as far back as 2003 when I first started makeup and they have never once failed to release a range that hasn’t had me gasping for air yet.

Let me just rewind back to last year when I was testing out a new product from Palmer’s. My skin was seriously going through a bad phase – the worst I’ve ever seen it. Luck would have it that I had a Bobbi Brown makeover scheduled during that time. I was ashamed of my skin! Luckily Bobbi Brown was able to come up with their moisturizing foundation and at the end of the makeover, you could barely see that my skin was flaking off in sheets. Phew.

So when I read about the coming launch of Bobbi Brown’s extra repair foundation, I was excited. Bobbi Brown works miracles, so I have utter faith in this foundation. And with winter coming up, I want to get my hands on these. Said to boost natural collagen levels in skin that will also reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles, this foundation will help skin look smoother, firmer and plumper. If this is true, then where do I sign up? Let’s not forget that it contains SPF as well. Yup, sun protection is a must even in winter.

It comes in a total of 13 shades, which is a really nice plus considering the many brands who seem to think that people come in colours between pale and semi-tanned only. The down side is that Australia is slow, as always. While it’s already been released in the states, we will only be getting it on June 12th. Oh well. All the more time for me to save up for the hefty $132.00 price tag, I guess. But if it’s going to be a miracle product, what’s too hefty a price?

    RAFW – the beauty edition

Today’s the last day of the Rosemount Australian Fashion Week. To say I wish I was there is a bit of an understatement. Work and commitments means the only way to oogle at RAFW is via online means.

So that’s what I’ve been doing. Closely following every show, pouring through images that come through and having heart stopping moments when I see drop dead gorgeous fashion or looks coming down that catwalk.

So I’ve decided to share some of my RAFW favourites with you. Some of the looks have been meh. Nude, fresh and young looks seems to have dominated RAFW and to be honest, not really my kind of look. My nude look consist of no makeup…

There were however some stand outs. And me falling in love with some brands that I didn’t think possible.

The first look that I fell in love with was done by Linda Jefferyes for M.A.C. at the Alice McCall show. Based mostly on a 60s feel, the look is slightly Bardoty but with a modern twist. I’m loving the eyeliner in the socket and the end result is absolutely stunning. While the rest of the face is quite simple, the eyes will send chills down your spine when combined with a model’s piercing look. Have a look at the photo below to see what I’m on about. Major love!!

I do suspect that my natural gravitation towards this look is fueled by my love for eyeliner. More reasons to use my eyeliners, always a good thing!

My next favourite came as a surprise. Not at the look, but at the people behind the look. Napoleon Perdis has never really managed to get my attention. His looks tend to be uninteresting and his products hardly ever stand out in the mass of products that flood the market these days. However, with the look he has done for Shakuhachi, he has really changed my opinion. Well done!

I was really riveted by the blue eyelashes. Such a point of difference and done by Nica Marcello for Bobbi Brown. Somehow blue eyelashes seemed more of an Illamasqua thing, so for them to make an appearance when Bobbi Brown’s on the watch is something really refreshing! The rest of the face is clean, simple and incredibly sweet as well. If I were to do a simple look, Bobbi Brown would be the first person I turn to for inspiration. Amazing.

This 70s look was done by Max May for M.A.C. I’m in love with the long and fine eyelashes but completely blown away by the rest of the eyes. A look that I can’t wait to try out on myself. I love the sharp contouring and the colouring… just beautiful. While M.A.C. may fail terribly at customer service, their artists obviously know what they are doing.

I have kept the best for last. When I was pouring through photos, I came across this look (done for Alex Perry) and stopped short. Stared at the computer screen for the what felt like an eternity before taking a slow breath. Definitely not an every day look, but how amazing does that look? I was so taken by it that it didn’t even hit me to look who had done the look. And when I did, I couldn’t believe my eyes.

    Napoleon Perdis.

Are you kidding me? WOW. Just wow.

Here’s what Napoleon Perdis said about this look:

“You know my vision is Alex Perry’s vision! It’s very much about Cuban Princess with a hint of orient. It’s quite expensive and luxurious. The purple and the gold is layered very nicely. I’m almost imagining Jerry Hall stepping out in the 70s in Studio 54. The lip is very neutral, gold tint. Flawless skin. Lots of lash. Lines to really bring out the eye shape. It’s kind of the evolution of Alex Perry from last season to another destination and to another mood and this is what we’ve come up with. I love it! I think it’s going to be strong on the catwalk, I think it will suit the collection and I think it’s extremely glamorous,” says Napoleon Perdis.

RAFW is still going, and maybe there will be a look to blow me away in more in the upcoming shows. But at this point, this is my best look of the show. Hooray!

Phew! Will you be running out with your wallet in hand? Or are you sitting on your wallet? I’m not sure right now. I’m craving, but I’ve only recently splurged on a whole lot of products and the new Ipad2… I’m not sure if I can spend more! But oh Bobbi Brown, how you tempt me!

I’ve also recently added a google friend counter and a link to my facebook page on the side bar, so I hope you can join me! The more the merrier, and I’d love to know who’s reading even if you don’t comment ;p

    Have a good day, ladies!

Bobbi Brown Counter Opening @ Myer Beauty Hall, Melbourne.

Years and years ago when I knew nothing about makeup, I wandered through the makeup counters in Myers and David Jones, feeling utterly lost and out of place. In despair, I turned to my friends for help and one of my girlfriends took one look at me and said : “Bobbi brown, it will be perfect for your skin tone.”

    I’ve never looked back since.

But I actually dislike walking through David Jones. Something about that place screams luxury and decadence. Everything seems out of my league and I always feel uncomfortable being in DJs. So I was rather delighted to hear when Bobbi Browns became part of the Myers Group too. When the beauty hall at Myer Melbourne was done (ever so recently), Violet and I were honored to be invited in for a counter opening.

I could tell you so much and yet still convey so little about how each and every product at Bobbi Brown oozes perfection. (Hey, I’m a huge BB fan, cut me some slack!) You just have to go down and try it out for yourself. The beautiful sleek packaging, the shiny and shimmery look…. I could feel that shiver of eager anticipation running down my back as Alexis, the Bobbi Brown PR manager brought us through each and every product range that they had.

That is, until I spotted this little gem and my attention completely switched off everything else while I coo’d over how incredibly adorable and cute it is. I really really really want this in my life! Am currently saving up my pennies in hopes of obtaining it… but with all the other expenses…. but oh I do so want this!

One thing I did learn from Alexis that really caught my interest however, was the story behind the brand. She told of Bobbi Brown as a mother, how it all started and I was drawn in, fascinated by it all. I really love hearing about the person behind the brand and more often than not knowing the effort, the tears and the joys that have gone into a brand will make or break the brand love for me. After hearing it all from Alexis, if I wasn’t a Bobbi Brown lover before, I definitely am now! Especially because Bobbi Brown herself has the same beliefs and same philosophy as myself when it comes to personal beauty.. but I’ll get into that in another post. The picture above shows Bobbi Brown’s journal in which the very first 10 lipsticks that started the brand were swatched.

Here’s a photo of us with Alexis. The lovely lady had the prettiest eyes ever! And so full of passion. I always love talking to people who are oozing with passion, it makes me excited too. Please don’t mind my crooked spectacles. It’s a long story, but the short of it is that it’s broken. I’m waiting on my new pair of spectacles and new contact lenses, so I don’t really have much of a choice here.

And who could go to Bobbi Brown and not leave without goodies? (I went back soon thereafter to pick up more stuff… you don’t want to know how many Bobbi Brown items are in my stash!) Thank you to Violet and Alexis from Bobbi Brown for a beautiful day out. I had so much fun and I hope to see you in Melbourne again!

p/s: all photos taken by the amazing Jimmy!
